Charity Contest Nominee – Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado Helping to Protect the Underprivileged

CITYWIDE CONNECT – In spite of what you see on television, not everyone is entitled to an attorney. On TV, most of the shows are about criminal cases where the justice system does provide you with a public defender or defense attorney, if you can’t afford one. In civil cases (in the real world), such as child custody, bankruptcy and foreclosure, if you can’t afford an attorney — you’re out of luck. And the consequences can be disastrous. […]

Charity Contest Nominee – Jewish Family Service Crosses Faith Boundaries to Rebuild Hope to Coloradans in Need

CITYWIDE CONNECT – One of the biggest misconceptions about the nonprofit agency Jewish Family Service (JFS) is that it only helps Denver’s Jewish population. The truth is that in spite of its name, JFS serves all people who need assistance, regardless of race, faith, or economic status. CEO Yana Vishnitsky stresses that the agency helps all who are in need, not necessarily only the “needy.” “I believe that everyone throughout their life can be in need, whether they are wealthy or poor. We provide the same quality of service to everyone, just on a sliding-scale fee basis.” […]

During the first half of 2012, A Precious Child has already impacted 16,000 children with no slowdown in sight. $5,000 Vote Nominee – Denver’s MaxFund Gives Hope Back to Homeless Animals

CHARITY FAN VOTE – Although the official mission of MaxFund is about finding good homes, or original owners, for injured stray animals, it’s really all about “hope for animals,” says clinic director Heidi Hahn. “We don’t presort due to medical condition or age,” says Hahn of Denver’s no-kill shelter, founded by Dr. Bill Suro and his wife Nanci. “We try to be the owners we want everyone else to be. We truly go the distance with our animals. We make them well, and then go to work to find their ‘forever’ homes.” […]
