Q3 Charity Vote Nominee: Denver’s ‘So All May Eat’ Cafe

Citywide Connect - Citywide BanksCitywide Banks next Facebook Fan Vote for its Quarterly Hand-Up Charity Donation will take place from September 8-20, 2011. This is the first of five charities that will be spotlighted leading up to this quarter’s Fan Vote.

Poor families often go hungry.  And low-wage workers, struggling to get by on two or three jobs, subsist on Value meals, chips, and soda: whatever is cheap and fast.

Citywide Banks - Charity Vote - Same Cafe - DenverBrad and Libby Birky, founders of So All May Eat (SAME) Café wanted to change that. Six days a week, in a Colfax Avenue storefront, they serve homemade, organic meals at a pay-what-you-can price. Offerings include bacon and date pizza to carrot soup; spinach salad to pepperoni pizza. Nobody is turned away.

Since 2006, SAME Café has served thousands of meals. Some customers are attorneys, teachers and students at East High. For others – day laborers, single Moms, temp workers – SAME Café is a lifeline.

“We hear from people who have experienced hard times,” said Brad Birky, founder.  “SAME café allowed them to eat when they were struggling to pay their bills, put gas in their car.”

Birky figures one meal costs $6 to prepare. But diners donate an average of just $4 per meal, leaving a gap. With $500 from Citywide Banks, Birky isn’t sure if he’d buy a week’s worth of organic groceries; repair the fridge; or fix the broken ice machine.

But he knows this: “For many people who come in here, this is their one chance to eat.”

When I have only $5.00 for my teenager and I to eat, we go to the SAME Cafe instead of any fast food place. Wonderful salads served on glass dishes, soups in glass cups, and the best pizzas ever, beat every fast food place every time, hands down! And when my teen is really hungry, they just keep feeding him until he is full, and then give him home baked cookies for dessert! Even the coffee is what you would expect from a high quality restaurant. Take a trip to East Colfax for lunch at the SAME Cafe; you’ll find yourself coming back for more.
