Citywide Banks’ next Charity Fan Vote for its $5,000 Quarterly Hand-Up Charity Donation will take place on Facebook from March 1-14, 2012. AMC Cancer Fund is one of five nominated charities that will be spotlighted leading up to this quarter’s Fan Vote. The general public is invited to participate in the vote. Voters are eligible to win prizes in addition to helping raise awareness for their favorite Front Range charity.
Did you know that cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US? About 1,638,910 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed, and about 577,190 Americans are expected to die of the disease, in 2012 alone.
That’s why the AMC Cancer Fund is focused solely on raising funds and awareness for the University of Colorado (CU) Cancer Center, the only comprehensive cancer center in the eight-state Rocky Mountain West and one of only 40 such centers in the country. As the hub of cancer research in Colorado, the center works with a consortium of more than 400 researchers and physicians, including three state universities and six institutions, all dedicated to translating science into long-term cancer survivorship.
The groundbreaking research that CU Cancer Center is conducting has a direct impact on the care provided to cancer patients at their facility. Patients diagnosed and treated at CU Cancer Center, for example, have higher 5-year survival rates for the top four cancers – lung, breast, prostate and skin – compared with statewide and national averages.
With national funds drying up, and no money coming from the state, the philanthropic dollars that AMC raises – $12 million in the last six years – go a long way toward helping the CU Cancer Center conquer cancer. Their current fundraising efforts include four major events a year, as well as engaging big and small donors on a grass roots level.
“We want to provide a way for every type of donor to give whether it’s a major gift, $1,000, $100 or $5,” says executive director Alice Norton.
The organization has a very long and varied history dating back to 1904 when it was originally a tuberculosis treatment center, then a cancer research center in the latter half of the 20th century (after the TB epidemic had waned), and now the fundraising arm for the innovative and life-saving work of the CU Cancer Center, which the research center became affiliated with in 2005.
If you’d like to give to the AMC Cancer Fund you can donate financially, volunteer your time, or help spread the word about, and attend, its events. Annual and workplace giving is also encouraged and appreciated. For more information. visit www.AMC.org.
With a donation of $5,000, Norton would hand it over to the CU Cancer Center director to put it toward the most strategic initiative of the center, which could be The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Translational Program, early detection lung cancer research, or any one of the exciting, innovative research projects being conducted at this world-class facility.
Vote for AMC to Receive $5,000 Donation in Facebook Vote
Each quarter, Citywide Banks spotlights five Front Range charities to raise awareness about their great work, needs, and corporate giving opportunities. The charities are nominated by Citywide employees. Then, during a 14-day vote on the bank’s Facebook Fan Page, customers and the local community select the most deserving charity to receive a $5,000 cash donation from Citywide Banks. $500 and $250 runner-up donations will be awarded to the charities receiving the second and third most votes, respectively. Our quarterly Fan Vote on Facebook is a fun way to get the community engaged in our campaign. Regardless of who wins the vote, all the nominated charities will get some valuable exposure.
